A Cornucopia of Thanksgiving Fun

You may have picked up all the Turkey Day cookbooks you need, but we've also got some Thanksgiving-themed items for your entertainment.

In the novel category, Janet Evanovich's humor lights up the story of two people brought together by a mischievous pet rabbit, a romance that leads to one big family dinner in Thanksgiving.

The Ghost at the Table by Suzanne Berne explores the inevitable tension and secrets that often surface when relatives gather for a holiday. Likewise, Jennifer Vanderbes' Strangers at the Feast tells the story of a less-than-happy family and a Thanksgiving Day that turns sinister. Mystery fans might enjoy Donald Bain's A Fatal Feast, where his beloved Jessica Fletcher character takes a post-meal stroll and stumbles upon a murder victim.

If nonfiction is your thing, try Thanksgiving: the biography of an American holiday, by James W. Baker, which explores the historical beginnings of the tradition and what it means to us today. Nathaniel Philbrick's popular book Mayflower gives a thoroughly-researched account of the Pilgrims' experiences. (For a humorous and knowledgeable take on the same subject, check out Sarah Vowell's The Wordy Shipmates).

In the mood for a movie? Home for the Holidays is a Thanksgiving must-see, with more amusing family dysfunction and a great cast including Holly Hunter and Robert Downey, Jr.

Lastly, one in the cooking category--we couldn't resist! Turn on public radio Thanksgiving morning to hear Turkey Confidential with Lynne Rosetto Kasper, a live call-in show where people get help with their potential Thanksgiving disasters (think, "Oh no, I forgot to thaw out the turkey) and the calm host soothes their worries. Kasper is host of the regular show "The Splendid Table," and you can get her latest book The Splendid Table's How to Eat Supper here at the library.

Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
